Many of y’all may know that adoption advocating and orphan care are topics very near to my heart. I knew ahead of times that it would be a hard read because of the great loss that adoption is borne from and reading our main girl’s backstory. The prologue hurt my heart in that way and I found myself tearing up. Shortly into the book, I realized how much I liked Evangeline. I enjoyed her sass and overall bright personality. I can’t say I liked Logan as much, but he was pretty decent. ;) I loved all of the faith content and while I was hopeful about giving this book a four-star rating, with all the kissing, I can’t really do that. The plot and the extra romance added was all very interesting, but because of the pretty heavy romance and kissing, it lowered my ratings. I’m giving “More Than Meets the Eye” a three-star rating on the caution that there is quite a bit of kissing and such, but I have to say that I enjoyed many other parts of the story. This book is SO GOOD!!!!! The beginning prologue is absolutely heartwrenching (I was tearing up, and I rarely do that). Then the rest of the book is so hilarious with plenty of action thrown in the mix. At this point, Karen Witemeyer has perfected her style of humor and action, a style I can't seem to get enough of. Even the characters' inner thoughts are worded very cleverly to create humor at points. I loved the main characters, but I think my favorite character was Zach. A delightful romp but with lots of heart and depth. I adored the heroine. And the hero grew into the man she thought he could be. The development of the story and characters was so enjoyable.

This is my second book to read by Witemeyer and I enjoyed it just as immensely. The orphan train in the beginning immediately gripped me. I thought the spiritual content was a decent balance. It strengthened more as the story progressed, and held a powerful punch at the climax. I appreciated that the characters weren’t perfect but had areas in which to grow spiritually—people to call them out and challenge them about how they’re following God. The romance was believably progressed. Quite a few mentions of feelings and desires (noticing the brawn and handsomeness, the beauty and physical build), a few semi-detailed kisses, and, in the end, masked comments about marriage intimacy. I would recommend this content for girls 18+. There was also a bit of violence in here with murders or attempted murders and descriptions to go with both. They fit the story, but some readers might want to be notified of such. *I received this book from Bethany House and happily provided my honest review*

This was super cute. I loved Evangeline and her positive outlook. I also loved her brothers. And Logan. Let's just say that he has a lot of issues to work through, but I love how he works through them. I'm hoping for a story about Zach. I received a copy from the author to help promote. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

This one was simply a lot of fun! Liked the mystery and the family dynamics just as much as I enjoyed watching the hero and heroine banter their way to true love. 16+ because there were a whole bunch of kisses in this one. I’ll try to come back later and link to the full review.

And so she grows lavished with love, though still secluded from society. She also grows determined never let a creature, human or animal, ever feel the aching pain of disapproval. Logan Fowler is thirsty for vengeance against the man who tore his family apart. He has a carefully calculated plan and is sure nothing can come in the way. Until the most unexpected an encounter with a mismatched eye girl has him second guessing all he's come to know about himself and his family. As more danger and animosity appear around them, Logan will have to chose who he's going to chose to protect, because there is no way he can pick both his family and the girl who is bringing sunshine into his life. Or can there? Can forgiveness and grace be such that justice is profoundly served and history. Can love grow in the darkest places to the point that every hurt is washed away and just a tickle in the past that doesn't have a say anymore? I've read many of Karen Witemeyer's books but for some reason I've only come to realize with this one how her characters are always bringing the best of each other. They work to serve each other and point out the best, alongside hope and deepest acceptance. *Many thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy. This is my honest review.

I LOVE sibling relationships (even when they are not blood siblings). The way the book started out was so tragic and sad! But there were so many lovely, lighthearted moments throughout the story to make up for it. And, as many readers, I can hardly wait to read Zach’s story next! You gotta love tough, broody characters like that with hearts of gold. Do yourself a favor and get reading Karen’s books if you haven’t already.

Tragedy forces 3 orphans to build a patchwork family and try to survive on their own. HOW SAD IS THAT?! Evangeline was such a spunky, kind of chaotic character that instantly brought a smile to everyone's face. She always saw the best even people, even if it was buried WAAAYY down deep inside. I loved her attitude and how she took on life. She took her past traumas and past insecurities and harnessed them, using them to help other people! And she had a pet hog...she was AWESOME! Logan's drive to seek vengeance quickly became an afterthought once he met and started spending time with Evangeline. Yes he might have set off to use her, but he quickly fell under the spell that was "Evie Hamilton" . I loved seeing the affect she had on him, how she challenged his reasons for vengeance and just made him a better man. There is always some sort of mystery tied into Karen's stories, and this one was great! AND TOTALLY UNEXPECTED. The puns and banter in this book brought me SO MUCH joy!! It felt like I was right there in the middle of this odd patchwork family and I loved every minute of it. I loved seeing Seth and Zach's protectiveness over Evangeline. It really just solidified that they were a family of the heart. There was so much hope and encouragement in this story, you could see God moving in their lives. One of my favorite things is being to SEE the change in characters. Where they learned to FULLY trust God. So many memorable moments and laughs. I rated this a 5/5 stars. I adored this story and cannot wait for Zach's story. 😉 *I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review**I was not required to give a positive review**All opinions are my own*

A new Karen Witemeyer book.... 04/10/2018- I just saw the cover today and I am sorely disappointed. This is such a far departure from previous Witemeyer novels and just sub-par for Bethany House in general. Mrs. Witemeyer's novels deserve better covers than this. 6/14/2018 UPDATE: 3.5 stars.

Everything that is perfection in fiction wrapped up in one beautiful story. I'm pretty much gobsmacked over this one. My favourite Karen Witemeyer novel for sure....and she's left me yearning for Zach's story so much so that I've searched the web trying to find a release date -- or anything about the next book in her Patchwork Family series -- but I've come up empty. Mournful sigh. Thankfully I'm still giddy over More Than Meets the Eye so that's some comfort. Especially when I think about Zach...wait...Logan is the hero in this novel and he is scrumptious but, clearly Zach has caught my attention and I need his story right now!!!! Okay, back to Logan -- Evie sums him up early on when she compares him to a snapping turtle! "Solitary. Hard shell to protect all the vulnerable areas. Adept at camouflage." Yep, that's Logan. He's a man driven to see justice served...or is it really revenge? He's spent years working on a plan to put things right...and then he meets Evie who helps him see that he's got it all wrong. She's all sunshine and light and the promise that happily ever afters are possible. Feisty and independent but so open and trusting and Logan quickly falls under her spell which complicates all those well-laid plans. For such a gnarly romance there's plenty of humour and tender moments too. I alternately laughed and swooned my way through to the end. (Wait until you meet Evie's pet -- wild boar Hezikiah!) And Evie's relationship with her brothers -- the way she 'manages' them is hilarious. Love the idea for this series and the concept of creating a patchwork family. Add in a perilous mystery and an unexpected secondary love story and I am one euphoric reader. Characters you care about, a compelling plot and just enough toe-curling kisses to make a fainting couch a necessity to get through this read safely -- sweet perfection! "People might try to hide their broken places and pretend to be whole, but the truth is that we all have failings. That is why we need each other."

From the gorgeous cover to the heartwarming story where family is the people you choose, More Than Meets The Eye was wonderful from start to finish. Evangeline Hamilton knows the cost of heartbreak. Yet she chooses to remain optimistic, celebrating the family God gave her and the simply joys in life. When a stranger purchases the land adjoining her brothers’ land, she intends to discover his true intentions, and if she shows him a little happiness and kindness along the way, all the better. Logan never intended to entwine Evie in his quest for revenge on her brother, but the Hamilton family is not what he expected. Evie and Logan must face the truth of the past and the dangers and mystery of the present if they are to have a future together. Karen Witemeyer writes such excellent romance, and More Than Meets The Eye was certainly no exception. Logan and Evie’s connection is undeniable, tangible and so much fun to revel in. But Logan’s secrets and his plan for justice threaten the foundation of their growing friendship and romance. Evie is a strong, stubborn and resilient character. Her joy seeps from the page - no wonder Logan falls under her spell so quickly. From the prologue, it is clear that Evie has faced many challenges in her life. But she, Seth and Zach forged together a wonderful little family. Their bonds, gentle teasing, and genuine sibling banter are such a delightful part of this book. Along with romance and family bonds, More Than Meets The Eye also contains mystery and suspense, both in Logan’s quest and an unrelated mystery that falls into their laps. Shoot-out, ambushes, fights, and clues that need to be uncovered all add drama and excitement to the story, as well as an extra romance plot line, which is very sweet. I thoroughly enjoyed More Than Meets The Eye. This book is the first instalment in the Patchwork Family series, which means there will be a sequel!!!! I cannot wait to read Zach’s story. My heart broke for his grief, the burdens he carries and the kindness and love he shows Evie and Seth, in his own reserved way. I just know that his story will be as wonderful as More Than Meets The Eye. The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own. Karen Witemeyer’s first book in the Patchwork Family series is a winner. The author grabs your attention with a tear-jerking prologue and hangs on to it all the way to the HEA epilogue. More Than Meets The Eye (Patchwork Family) by Karen Witemeyer is the first in a series of books set in 1894 Texas. “When her family is threatened, she doesn’t expect falling in love to be their defense” It is Pecan Gap, Texas, 1894. Everybody is hiding secrets: Evangeline Hamilton, with her mismatched eyes is considered a freak. Evie, along with her adopted brothers, Zach and Seth, are hiding their real last names so they can continue as a family. Logan Fowler is hiding his identity as he seeks justice for his mother— or is it revenge? The main characters keep asking themselves: Where do my loyalties lie? As circumstances change, so do those definitions of justice and revenge. Can the love of God and human devotion overcome and unite these very different people? Karen Witemeyer delivers a delightful story with her signature humor and fiesty heroine and a hero who is trying to do the right thing. She causes the reader to ponder the issues of prejudice and acceptance, forgiveness and reconciliation. And whose justice should we really be seeking? A satisfying and exciting conclusion to this old west tale will make you glad you ventured into Pecan Gap. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishing. From its heart wrenching prologue to its heartwarming epilogue, Karen Witemeyer’s latest book is a pure delight and arguably her best book yet. Who can resist a heroine with a penchant for rescuing strays, including a wild boar, and a hero who – despite his best intentions – falls head over heels in love with the one woman he is certain is absolutely wrong for him? I highly recommend this beautifully written romance. I’m waiting eagerly for the next of the Patchwork Family books.

She has created a cast of characters sure to win her readers' hearts. Except the bad guys, of course, and there are a few here. There is danger afoot and she throws even more into the mix as the tale goes on. I was barely unable to put the book down when life intervened. Highly recommended. I can't wait for the next book in this series. *My thanks to the publishers for a copy of this book. The opinions here are entirely my own.

More Than Meets the Eye is the beginning to Karen Witemeyer's new series, Patchwork Family. This one has got to be my favorite written her to date. It was full of humor that made me laugh so hard that I snorted. Not a good book to read in public, unless a reader does not embarrass easily. Logan and Evangeline were so much fun. The book, also, has some mystery, suspense, and action. More Than Meets the Eye is one book that should not to be missed. Karen Witemeyer writes as good as Jane Austen for me. The same feelings and excitement I get from reading Pride and Prejudice, I get from Karens books. I am never dissapointed and I always am left wanting more. "To win her heart" and "Short straw bride" are a couple of my all time favorites. She writes Heroes and Heroines we want to get to know, cheer for and love.

A book that offers a lot of different things going on including, prejudice, murder, bootlegging, kidnapping, cheating, to name a few. While this book begins on the orphan train, that is not the main focus of this story, yes, it is about the children’s survival, but mostly as adults. We do get a bit of romance here, and it is really sweet with new beginnings, and you can see the faith of these people leading them. This is a story that starts out on an orphan train that crashes and kills 4 year-old Evangeline's older brother. The two surviving older orphan's promise to take care of her and the story begins. More Than Meets the Eye was a sweet story. Even though there were plenty of lighthearted moments, this storyline delved into the hurts that wound people and how God and caring friends can help to heal those hearts. Evangeline not only suffered much loss at a young age, she also carried around pain from the way she was treated by most people in her community. Logan carried a lot of hurt and a heart full of vengeance toward a man who wronged his family years earlier. It was interesting to watch as More Than Meets the Eye was a sweet story. She fought dirtier than a saloon brawler." Logan Fowler was unprepared when his damsel in distress turned out to be a warrior sprite. After untangling himself from the girl and her pig, he discovers that she is kin to the very man that he has come to find. Logan remains convinced that Zach Hamilton is responsible for his father's death and his mother's deep melancholy, so befriending the man's pretty sister just might give him the upper hand. But there was "more than meets the eye" when it came to Evangeline. Enjoy this author's trademark wit as she navigates the swirling currents of revenge and romance. "Be ye kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." Ephesians 4:32

Moving forward into the chapters. we are re-introduced to the Hamilton siblings as adults. A rag-tag family built on solid devotion and trust, the trio have been on their own for many years with Zacharias, the eldest, being the provider and protector. I loved the strong family bond these accidental siblings shared. We are also introduced to Logan Fowler, a young man wanting justice for his family. Logan is a strong character and his point of view is quite remarkable. The blurb about this story from online sources does a great job of masking the details for this book, and I am glad. The plot that unfolded was completely unexpected! Do yourself a favor and don't read any spoiler reviews for this one! I hope you enjoy the twists and turns just as much as I did! The novel ended well, wrapping up the main storyline while leaving things open for a future book. I certainly hope there is a future book, and soon, because I already miss this awesome family! I highly recommend this book to fans of clean Christian historical fiction, fans of action and adventure and fans of Karen Witemeyer's well written, fun books! I cannot wait to read what she releases next! More Than Meets the Eye will be released on June 5, 2018. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers though NetGalley. I love when an author can draw me right into the story and setting and make me feel like I'm there! Her insecurities about her eyes and the way many of the townspeople respond to her difference sharply contrasts with the young woman that Logan gets to know, and he provides encouragement and support. Logan has his own spiritual journey as he struggles with the concepts of justice and vengeance, and his blossoming relationship with Evie. I liked seeing the interactions between Logan and Evie's overprotective brothers and the way they slowly began to trust each other. The discovery of an abused young woman shakes up the plot and adds mystery and danger as Logan and the siblings protect her and themselves against a ruthless and conniving villain. Secrets, family loyalty, and romance all complicate the decisions Logan and Evie have in front of them, and I was completely immersed in the story the whole time. Highly recommend! In her new series debut, Karen Witemeyer examines some characters with unique challenges. Evangeline Hamilton has not had an easy life. She’s lost family and people steer away from her because of her unique eyes (one blue and one brown). Yet she has managed to carve her own happiness with her brothers in the town of Pecan Gap, Texas. And she has not let the tragedy nor the ignorance of people smother her joy. Logan isn’t at all expecting to find someone like Evangeline in his search for justice. And this woman manages to upend his world (in the best kind of way). More than Meets the Eye is a book that examines what makes a family. Evangeline’s family is what not traditional, but she and her brothers have carved out their place with each other. Evangeline’s sunshine filters into Zach’s sullenness and Seth’s protectiveness. None of this family is perfect, but they love each other. With a little mystery, some action, a few laughs, and loads of emotion, Witemeyer delivers another engaging read with lots of heart.
